NAB SHOW 2018

NAB 2018 is not just a broadcast expo. It featured among multitude of events next gen autonomous transport (!) an esports conference which is about dragging gaming into broadcast. A conference on machine, deep learning and artificial intelligence in film making, Visual effects from Star wars, visual effects from Behind Stranger Things – 2, News coverage of Las Vegas Shooting, Future of content production, Future of Radio, Disruptive forces in the media landscape, A Video Streaming Summit, and a session on Future of Profit(!).


Roger Keating was recognised by 2018 NAB Digital Leadership Award for his leadership in the launch of NewsON, the mobile-only app for local news aggregation. He has also supported the NAB SPROCKIT program and contributed to the Dyle mobile DTV project. SPROCKIT connects 30 startups that deliver services in creation, management and curation, distribution and delivery and consumption in media and entertainment. Supported by Samsung and HCL technologies among others.

Awards & Recognisation

Mark Aitken was awarded 2018 NAB Television Engineering Achievement Award for his remarkable involvement in ATSC and mobile DTV and the formation of Sinclair’s joint venture ONE Media. ONE Media is a ‘Think Tank’ startup, currently focused on creating the “Next Generation Broadcast Platform” for the Broadcast Television industry. ONE is for Open Network Enabled - The platform is being designed to accommodate and extend the existing high power/tall tower broadcast infrastructure and associated business models, while, for the first time, supporting delivery of robust vehicular and pedestrian mobile television and other data services to all portable devices.

In concert with its joint venture partners, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Coherent Logix, ONE Media is a technology innovator at the forefront of developing industry standards and related technologies for Broadcast IP Network Services encompassing its flexible and enhanced vision for broadcasting.

Tom Jones earned 2018 NAB Radio Engineering Achievement Award for his heavy involvement in the development of the Method Moments analysis for AM directional arrays and more recently the AM revitalization effort. Despite FM surely AM does have a life after life and BBC and AIR are two radio networks still happy with AM.

18-Attractions and Pavillions – A NAB habit, there are so many that no one, repeat no one can dream of participating in all of them, or rather even a few of them. Maybe, repeat maybe just a couple of them, if you have the energy.

NEW at NAB 

Panasonic’s range of products included AK-UC4000 4K/HDR/high-speed studio camera with 4.4K native resolution and high-speed 240fps capability; EVA 2.0 free firmware upgrade for the 5.7K AU-EVA1 cinema camera that greatly enhances its recording capabilities with ALL-Intra frame formats and RAW data output. Panasonic also announced the EVA1 and VariCam LT will take full advantage of the new ProRes RAW software for a faster and more efficient RAW workflow; AV-HLC100 Live Production Center with Network Device Interface (NDI) that combines a 1 ME switcher, remote camera controller, graphics overlays, streaming/recording and audio mixer functions to enable easy live streaming with one-person operation; VariCam LT V. 6.0 CineLive firmware that sets the cinema camera up for live and near live multi-cam use for events, concerts, television shows and corporate productions; a new line-up of PTZ cameras with built-in Network Device Interface (NDI|HX) support--the AW-HN38, AW-HN40, AW-UN70 and AW-HN130.

Broadcast Technology

While Veritone, an artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive solutions provider, launched aiWARE™ platform to set the standard for enterprises and institutions effective and profitable engagement with AI, Geniatech announced that it has selected its MxL692 ATSC receiver (tuner and demodulator) to bring live digital television to Android mobile devices. The MxL692 is the industry’s first single-channel integrated ATSC receiver IC.

Meanwhile, MACOM has introduced new transimpedance amplifier supporting 12G-SDI over optical fibre for broadcast video applications, and Samsung and Harman had showcased industry-leading lineup of broadcast and audio solutions at NAB 2018. The products exhibited by Samsung incorporated an enhanced Samsung 360 Round camera solution, including updates to its livestreaming and post-production software.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS announces its first JPEG XS codec implementation for video production at the NAB Show. JPEG XS in general is a new codec under standardization by ISO/IEC SC29 WG1 (‘JPEG committee’) for IP workflows in studio environments, local video networks and VR/AR applications which allows transferring high-resolution video data over standard Ethernet or other wired connections.

Ooyala has collaborated with Avid to integrate the new Flex Media Platform into Avid MediaCentral. Ooyala showcased it’s this new Flex Media Platform at NAB 2018. Data Expedition, creator of the industry’s only intelligent data transport software, has partnered with radically simple media management software leader axle ai to add accelerated data transport for the new axle ai Hub appliance launched at the show.

The show also witnessed the first next-generation TV signal in the Phoenix Model Market with KFPH-CD Channel 35, owned by Univision Communications, now transmitting UniMás network programming using the new ATSC 3.0 standard. Wowza brought updated ClearCaster with Syndication and Redundancy for Broadcasters. ClearCaster now provides automated redundancy setup, ensuring unparalleled reliability on Facebook Live, as well as the ability to simulcast streams through the Wowza Streaming Cloud service.

Storage

mLogic, the leader in Thunderbolt LTO tape archiving solutions, announced introduction of high-speed RAID solutions designed specifically for digital content creators and post production professionals. ProGrade Digital has become the pioneer in demonstrating CFexpress™ 1.0 Technology in 1TB Capacity at the show, while Western Digital Corporation is meeting the escalating fast-transfer and high-capacity demands of professional content creators by enabling real-time 4K and 8K workflows with three new professional-grade ultra-fast solutions in its powerful G-Technology® G-DRIVE® and G-SPEED® Shuttle product families. The solutions are G-DRIVE Mobile Pro SSD, G-DRIVE Pro SSD, and G-SPEED Shuttle SSD.

Grass Valley’s iTX, one of the most widely-deployed and advanced playout platform for broadcast television, is now accelerated by Mellanox Rivermax Media Acceleration software library and Mellanox ConnectX-5 network adapters. The company demonstrated the solution at the show.

Media Asset Management

DataDirect Networks (DDN®) has certified its MEDIAScaler® and WOS® storage solutions with Dalet, the foremost provider of media asset management and workflow orchestration, to simplify management of Ultra HD broadcast workflows at scale. The solutions was also showcased at the NAB Show. intoPIX, the innovative compression expert, has shown teasers to audiences at previous tradeshows with TICO CPU-based accelerated software for HD, 4K or 8K highlighting the quality, low-latency and speed advantages of the SDK. BitRouter and Coherent Logix have collaborated to create one of the first ATSC 3.0 receiver systems to support the entire protocol stack as defined by the new digital television compliancy standards. The solution was showcased at the show.

igolgi, a leading provider of video processing, delivery and analytics software and solutions, has introduced iGoCast, a new service that delivers local broadcast content through OTT platforms.

FILM

As the film legends and technology pioneers meet to transcend the boundaries of content creation at the NAB Show, they included everything from cameras, lens and lighting to set design and visual effects, creating a masterpiece is an art form under this community.
