Product Focus

The amount of research and development and innovation that has been invested in perfecting LED technology and
make it your first choice is finally paying off. Broadcast Video Producer takes a look at the best ‘lights’ of all.

Arri’s line of Skypanel is high-quality LED soft lights which have a significantly high lumen output for very low wattage. The two types introduced are - a remote phosphor which can be changed between tungsten, daylight, and another K degree, and one multicolor LED which can create almost any color. This compact and ultra-bright have been designed keeping form, color, beam field and output in mind – a result of more than a decade of years of research and development of LED technology at ARRI. It features ARRI’s successful L-Series LED Fresnels, SkyPanel is one of the most versatile soft lights on the market, as well as one of the brightest. Like the L-Series, SkyPanel ‘C’ (Color) versions are fully tuneable; correlated color temperature is adjustable between 2,800 K and 10,000 K, with excellent color rendition over the entire range. Full plus and minus green correction can be achieved with the simple turn of a knob, and in addition to CCT control, vivid color selection and saturation adjustment is also possible. The remote phosphor versions of SkyPanel are roughly 10% brighter than the color versions and have a lower price point. Different color temperature panels are available, including 2,700 K; 3,200 K; 4,300 K; 5,600 K; 6,500 K and 10,000 K. A chroma green phosphor panel is available for green screen lighting. To list few of it drawbacks, it has a bulky external power supply and is pretty expensive. Also, the unit is a rectangle and not a circle, which changes its spread distribution plus the front lens telescopes out to spot which means that any flags or nets set during lighting would have to be re-set if the unit was spotted or flooded on set.

The Ushio PRO-Panel 2x2 is a professional Solid State LED soft light and efficiently eliminates the harsh glare and multiple shadow effects associated with typical budget LED panel lights. The light is soft with no multiple shadows because of the built in diffuser front. The unit is bi-color so it can be adjusted accordingly to whatever the available light Kelvin is. Few of its best features include the built-in dimmer and extra lightweight plus its small size. The 2x2 flat surface emits a nice bright soft warmth that envelops the subject which has been proved to be much better than using a 1x1. Such a form factor allows it to be extremely handy on-location and can be carried around with a lot of ease. It comes with a gel frame and soft grid. Its advantage over the standard 1X1 LED panels is the larger surface front which invariably results in a better throw. Even at 110 watts, the output is remarkable. It offers all the advantages benefits of LED lighting such as cool operation, energy savings, and long life plus the exceptional features of flicker free operation and a wide variable color temperature range. The light unit is best suited for cinematography, video broadcast, and professional photography market.

The new LED Tenner from Mole-Richardson has the potential to replace lower wattage HMIs. It comes in either Daylight or Tungsten with an output of a 10k tungsten or a 6K HMI. This flicker free light consumes amazingly less electricity and draws 19 amps - so it can be plugged into a 20amp wall outlet which eliminates the need to use a generator. It has the feature of direct DC dimming (Local Dimmer 100% - 0% ;DMX Dimmer 100% - 0%). Moreover, the heat emitted is negligible thus keeping the environment cool. The lights are constructed using aluminum and steel with interlocking channels. This 24 in/618 mm(d) x 23 in/590mm(w) x 33 in/836mm(h) body weighing 18.60 kg has large power supply is large and Mole is considering adding wheels to it.

These versatile compact and light-weight soft lights feature the Remote Phosphor Technology for changing color temperature by simply swapping out panels for higher output and greater color accuracy. It has a small dimmer and goes down to zero without flicker. It has high CRI ratings of 98 at 3200K and 94 at 5600K as well as TLCI ratings of 99 at 3200K and 97 at 5600K. Also, output at 3' is rated at 315 lux / 30.5 fc at 3200K and 362 lux / 37.5 fc at 5600K. Additionally, it has a wide beam angle of 160° along with both local and DMX dimming options from 0-100%. The panels are extra durable with a weather-resistant construction and the units are made in the USA. The 3.25 x 5.25 x 1.5" panel also emits zero UV light and has a 1/4"-20 thread on the base for mounting in a variety of situations. An AC adapter is included, along with a 6' extension cable and both 3200K and 5600K phosphor panels while optional battery kits can convert it for ultra-portable operation.
