Leading Display Monitors

The initial stages of production, when the cinematographers have to capture the footage, is the heart of every production process as the entire final output of the video is based on it. In order to ensure that the cinematographers get the exact idea of the appearance of the final output, it is extremely vital that they have a clear and detailed view of the footage captured. To facilitate this requirement, they can use display monitors that act as larger viewfinder for the camera operators so that every detail of the footage is taken care of minutely.

These monitors greatly help the post production process by reducing the time needed in activities like image rescaling and line dubbing amongst others. Understanding the importance of these devices in the preproduction process, Broadcast Video Producer has made an effort to shortlist a few leading monitors.

The fast frame rate support is perfect for fast motion such as sports, plus you get a totally future proof design!

Blackmagic Design Video Assist

The Blackmagic Video Assist 4K features a 7” 1920 x 1200 display to help you frame and focus your shots, and provides 6G-SDI and HDMI inputs for recording the video output from professional and consumer cameras. The Video Assist records 10-bit 4:2:2 video up to UHD 4K at 30p to high-speed UHS-II SDHC/XC memory cards using industry-standard Apple ProRes and Avid DNx codecs. A touchscreen interface allows you to adjust settings and access monitoring features such as histogram, zebra, focus peaking, audio meters, timecode display, and more. To power the monitor, a 110-240V AC power adapter is included. It also has dual battery slots on the rear that power the monitor using Canon LP-E6 type batteries.

The front of the monitor features a bright 7” 1920 x 1200 display for evaluating your shots. On-screen controls allow you to vary the brightness and contrast depending on the shooting situation, and the wide 135° viewing angle makes it easy for multiple crew members to watch at the same time. It even auto rotates so no matter which way you mount it, the picture is always displayed correctly.

The Blackmagic Video Assist records your video at the 10-bit 4:2:2 quality. Files are recorded on to high-speed UHS-I or UHS-II SDHC/XC cards using ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, Proxy) codecs. These are industry-standard formats, so you can start editing immediately without having to convert the files. Recording can be automatically triggered on your Blackmagic Video Assist from the start/stop button on compatible cameras, so you can remain focused on getting the shot without having to worry about operating additional gear.

A universal 110V to 240V AC power supply so you can use the Video Assist anywhere. Plug the AC adapter into the 12V DC input you get continuous power, or run off of dual Canon compatible LP-E6 type batteries. Intelligent battery management will use the battery with less charge first, then immediately switch to the other battery without interrupting recording. When connected to AC power, the batteries can be charged in parallel while the Video Assist is still being used.

The Ninja 2 incorporates anti-shock technology that allows you to continue to record even if your HDD skips a few frames from being jarred. The Master Caddy system allows you to choose to use optional 2.5” HDDs or SSDs with your Ninja 2. SmartLog editing tools allow you to mark selects during playback or recording, and can save you time when you go to edit. The Ninja-2 supports HD or SD sources and encodes it in real-time to 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD at up to 220Mbps. Recording is always in 10-bit, even from an 8-bit source. Color registries are added for integration into higher bit-depth graphics from CG, animation and special effects. This helps avoid banding in your footage, even if your source is 8-bit.

Atomos Ninja Flame

The Atomos Ninja Flame is a 7”, 1920 x 1200 on-camera recording monitor combining 4K recording with a 10-bit FRC panel that supports native display of HDR (log) footage, as well as high-brightness viewing of Rec. 709 footage. It utilizes an HDMI input to support clean output signals at resolutions up to UHD 4K, recording it to 2.5” SSDs using 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR codecs.

The 10-bit panel and AtomHDR display technology support a brightness range of over 10 stops, allowing you to more accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images, or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor offers built-in pre-sets to accurately translate popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remaining unaltered.

In addition to HDR monitoring, the monitor also offers a High Bright mode for traditional Rec. 709 monitoring. This mode takes advantage of the full 1500 cd/m² brightness to allow for more confident monitoring in bright outdoor environments, even without a sun hood. In HDR mode, use of an included snap-on sun hood is required, as displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.
